Activity

The department continues to provide mutual-aid to Central Coventry on both fire and EMS calls.  It is good to see that Western Coventry does not have to rely on mutual-aid to handle our calls.  The dept. members are continuing to provide an excellent service to our community.  Recently the members were planning to have an EMT-B course taught at our station with a state instructor while the dept. members were going to instruct all of the labs and practicals while giving the profit to the mens fund for the purchase of extrication equipment to be mounted on Engine-9.  The members anticipated raising $10,000 from this event.  I am hearing that the event has been put on hold.

Apparatus

Engine-9 has been placed in service.  It responded to its first fire.  It was able to maneuver around a dwelling and gain access to the rear of the property where there was a fully involved truck fire, parked between two buildings.  Four of us were at the station (5:00 pm) when the call came in.  E-9 and ET-8 responded immediately.  While ET-8 was forced to remain in the roadway (due to its size) Engine 9 attacked the fire using only 500 gallons of water and on board foam.  Engine-9 performed as expected.  It goes to show you the importance of having a smaller truck that can meet the tight challenging maneuvers in the district.  One building sustained minor paint blistering only.  Had we not been in the station when the call was dispatched, I am confident that one of the buildings would have burned to the ground.  The homeowner commented several times about our quick response.  I guess you can’t put a price on that.

Personnel

Peter Gardner will be taking the state cardiac test today.  Peter has also spent the past several weekends at the station working on Engine-9 performing various work on the compartments and mounting of tools and equipment.  Eight members represented the dept. at the West Greenwich Memorial Day Parade while proudly displaying our apparatus.

Training

Another job well done by the dept.  The pump operator/apparatus operator course is winding down and will be done on June 23rd.  The practicals have been impressive as it helped us get familiar with the new Engine-9.

Grants

The cascade system for Summit Station will be delivered in mid July and should be fully functional by the end of July.

Other Business

Engine 9 was on display at the Brooklyn Tri-State Fire apparatus show.  A local Conn. Fire Chief who ws in the market for a new truck was so impressed with it, he ordered a duplicate, while a second Chief is in the process of doing so.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chief Joel Pomfret
