Activity

The transition into the new facility went well.  The night shift on duty at the new station were alerted by the front door bell sounding & were greeted with our first official call.  A passing motorist pulled in experiencing difficulty breathing.  Our staff took promp action and transported to Kent Hospital.  The patient is a taxpayer of WCFD and I am sure he appreciated the professional service that he received.  I cannot say enough about the success that the night staffing continues to display.  Like our day time staff, If not out answering the call of duty, the night time staff are performing in house duties.  I can not recall the last time that WCFD has missed a call.  I hope that our dept. can continue to shine.

Department Apparatus

While Rescue 8 was out for three repairs, Chief Seltzer supplied us with his surplus rescue vehicle.  Annual hose testing is being performed by the dept. personnel and should be completed within three weeks.  Representatives from Twin Lights and Poly Tank have taken all measurements on Engine 8 to order the new Poly tank which should be ready for installment in approximately 4 weeks.  On a recent patient transport to R.I. Hospital, I received a phone call from our crew at 2:30 am. Stating that the rescue vehicle was broken down.  I packed some tools and parts that I anticipated would be required to make the repairs.  Fortunately John Owen was one of the crew members on board.  We both spent a couple of hours under the truck and performed the needed repair.  This allowed our rescue vehicle to be put back into service in a timely fashion while averting a costly tow and repair.  I guess this is one of those many small things that we all seems to pich in at the right time making us a very successful dept.

Personnel

Congratulations to Steve & Sarah Autieri on the birth of their daughter, Allyson Elaine on October 6th.  I cannot say enough about the members and officials who gave so much of their time to the new station project.  Cleaning, building furniture, moving, landscaping, countless hours spent in district meetings and meetings with various agencies.  The station is everything we expected with endless compliments from taxpayers and the other local fire departments.  An individual recently walked in off the street inquiring about joining as a volunteer.  After many questions, I found him to be a resident of the district and he is currently enrolled in the EMT-B program as well as the Fire Science program at CCRI.  Needless to say he was forwarded an application and seemed very interested.

Department Training

All members have taken the state EMT recertification test.  I have been supplied with the test results from our Class Instructor.  Now that we have settled into our new station, the Deputy Chief is now organizing the next training schedule.  The Firefighter I Course seems to be going well based on comments from the students.

Department Grants

I have not received word from FEMA.  The DEM Wildland Grant has been awarded to us.  We have requested for the purchase of class A foam.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chief Joel Pomfret
