The department annual Christmas party will be held at the Foster Country Club on 12-20-08. This event is also a fundraiser for the district. Tickets are being sold for $35.00 p/person. A few individuals have inquired about joining our dept. Two of them are EMT-C’s. A number of volunteers continue to cover the station at all hours. On veterans day we had a walk in at Summit Station experiencing cardiac difficulties. Fortunately we had a ALS crew present, covering the holiday. We also had a wood stove incident that day with a good response of personel.
The rescue and both brush trucks were inspected by the Health dept. All 3 trucks passed their inspections. I was advised by Coastal International that R-8 is now out of warranty. It is hard to believe it is already 5 years old. It has been a good truck for us with much life left in it. Annual hose testing has been completed.
The EMT class students are awaiting their BCI results to move forward with the state test. We have two new members on board.
On 11-22-08 the dept will be training at the Old Summit Rd. training site with propane fire simulators. Old Mystic Fire Dept which purchased these simulators with DHS Grant money will be sending 2 instructors as well as the propane apparatus. The Providence news stations have been notified and welcome to attend the training. The Foster and Sterling Fire departments will be participating at this training also. Also the RIT training has been completed. A thank you to Retired Chief Hoxie who instructed that training for us. A FFI & FF II course is being put on by the Foster Center Fire Dept. The Woonasquatucket League is sponsoring this training. As a member of that league, I can send 2 of our members to that training free of charge. I can also send more than 2 if we have more members interested.
Both stations had the heating fuel tanks filled and are ready for winter. We will be mounting the plow onto the brush truck at the appropriate time. The propane tanks are currently at 40% and will be filled for the Summit generator.
I started a program of monitering smoke/co detectors in our district. Each piece of our apparatus contains 2 detectors and spare batteries which we will distribute to our residents as needed. Whenever we enter a residence for a call, EMS or Fire, we are checking to see if there are appropriate detectors present. If not we will offer them to the residents. In the event the time is not appropriate, such as an EMS transport call, a note is made to perform a follow up at that residence. This had recently happened in the district, where a medical patient passed out in bed while smoking. The house filled with smoke and there were not detector present. After the crew transported to the hospital, Captain Mann returned to the residence and installed a detector.
Respectfully Submitted,
Chief Joel Pomfret
